No ordinary 1930s building, this is the rarest of architectural gems. With outstretched arms embracing its pools like a giant lobster, its timeless modernism is the very essence of Art Deco.
But in recent years its pavilion has been allowed to fall into disrepair, and its poolside and surrounding lawns have been sadly neglected. It is reminiscent of the way parts of Brighton Marina were allowed to deteriorate before its owners submitted their 'regeneration' proposals. So it was hardly a surprise to discover that moves were afoot to concrete over the pools and convert the pavilion into flats.
What would amount to the rape of this irreplaceable part of our architectural heritage cannot be allowed. Saltdean's other Art Deco masterpiece, the Ocean Hotel, has already had its heart ripped out (by Explore Living) to create a warren of overpriced, undersized flats, and it would be disastrous to consign the Lido to a similar fate.
Saltdean Lido is crying out to be restored to its former splendour as a unique recreational facility. Repaired and revitalised, with a new café, restaurant and community facilities, the Lido could be the pride of Saltdean. The savebrighton campaign is giving full support to the impressive Save Saltdean Lido campaign.
